Beach fun and language studies

IH Cape Town is a dedicated language institute that forms part of the International House World Organisation, a network of language schools around the world. It offers various courses from Standard English consisting of 20 lessons per week and Intensive English consisting of 30 lessons per week to Business English and teacher training courses. It is situated in a safe and cosmopolitan area called Sea Point which is a 2 minute walk from the beach and also within walking distance to shops, banks, restaurants, bars, pubs and laundry facilities and all its accommodation.

School details

Classes start every Monday, the minimum stay is two weeks. Languages taught include, apart from various English programs, Spanish and Portuguese. School facilities include dedicated computers with internet access for students use, free WiFi, a large common room with free coffee and tea, a games room as well as a Business Centre.

Contextual lessons are balanced to ensure that students improve their ability to apply language structures (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) for authentic communication and improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Intensive English

Provides further improvement of student’s fluency and communicative competence by expanding on vocabulary and practicing speaking skills.

Business English

The core syllabus consists of:
• Business Correspondence (Business Writing)
• Telephoning

• Socialising
Lessons include a focus on relevant grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as on skills practice (reading, writing, speaking and listening) within a business context.

Private Tuition

One-to-one lessons can be either intensive or additional to group lessons. These lessons are ideal for focusing on English for Specific Purposes (for example Legal English or Medical English) or on English for Academic Purposes, where teachers are able to design their lessons according to students’ specific needs. Private tuition is also beneficial for further work on language (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) and/or skills practice (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Exam Preparation

IELTS and TOEFL
These courses consist of Standard English classes in the morning, followed by exam preparation (either IELTS or TOEFL) in the afternoon. Students wanting to take these exams in Cape Town are advised to book the exam before the course starts as the exam centres have limited spaces available.
Cambridge FCE, CAE and CPE
These exam preparation courses take place three times a year, starting in January, March/April and September/October. Exam dates are set by Cambridge ESOL and exams are taken in March, June and December. Courses are intensive and focus on both language (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) and skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) work relevant to each exam. Full mock exams are regularly administered to ensure that students are suitably prepared for their exams.

Social and cultural offers

There are daily activities on offer which students can book directly through the schools social desk and allow students to participate in and experience Cape Town.
Every day there is a tour or trip for the students. From Wine tasting, Botanical Garden visits and cheetah sanctuaries, to shark cage diving, shopping trips and moonlight mountain walks. Students can go on weekend trips and Safaris to experience the African nature, wildlife and beauty. Once to twice a month IH Cape Town organises an in-school event which may be anything from a masked “braai” (South African barbeque) to sundowners on the schools deck.

Cheetah Rehabilitation & Conservation
A unique cheetah summer camp, 20kms from the Kruger National Park. Enjoy a cultural embrace with a difference and get intimate with Africa’s wildlife heritage, including a range of activities from rock and wall climbing, conservation and ecology training to mountain biking, river rafting as well as cultural experiences with the local Shangaan tribe.

Lion Care Programme
An unforgettable volunteer experience working with the Borne to Be Wilde Project in Port Elizabeth set in a small reserve that includes over 40 different wildlife species from Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Caracals and a variety of Antelopes. Daily activities include the hand-rearing of Lion cubs (when possible), lion feeding and observation, as well as flora and fauna conservation.

Travelling Classroom
A conservation summer camp departing from Johannesburg and travelling through South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia for 16 days.

4-Day Safaribr> A 3-night Safari including the Kruger National Park and 1 night’s stay in Johannesburg after or prior to the course

Costs:

(Travel expenses, board, lodging, application or placement fees, pocket money, insurance)

Accommodation costs vary depending on the type of accommodation and may cost between €125 for economy and €225 for superior, all of which include breakfast 7 days a week. Placement fees are €30 for accommodation and €40 for course registration.
Pocket money needed would be about €150 - €200 per week. This is should the student wish to have lunches and dinners out, go for drinks and enjoy the city life. For day trips and excursions students should budget with another €70 - €100; this is if they decide to do something on a daily basis.
